About Tunnell Subsurface Consulting

Tunnell Subsurface Consulting provides groundwater, drainage, subsurface, and PFAS-related consulting for clients who need clear, practical insight before site problems turn into larger construction, environmental, or regulatory issues.

Led by Matthew Tunnell, a geologist and Juris Doctor, TSC brings together more than a decade of field experience in groundwater, dewatering, drainage systems, excavation support, foundations, roads, and subsurface site conditions. That experience includes major public and private work, including projects involving the State of Michigan and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

TSC was built on the understanding that many of the hardest project problems begin below the surface. Groundwater conditions, poor drainage assumptions, hidden subsurface constraints, and environmental concerns such as PFAS can all affect cost, schedule, constructability, compliance, and long-term liability. Identifying those issues early can make the difference between a manageable project and a costly one.

What makes TSC different is the ability to look at a project from both a technical and legal perspective. The work is informed not only by geology and field construction experience, but also by legal training that helps clients think more clearly about documentation, defensibility, regulatory exposure, and project risk.

TSC supports developers, contractors, municipalities, law firms, insurers, and property owners on matters involving groundwater and geologically supported analysis. Services include drainage and groundwater review, dewatering support, subsurface risk evaluation, site-condition troubleshooting, and consulting where PFAS, site history, or environmental conditions may influence planning, development, remediation, or risk management decisions.

PFAS issues are often treated as separate from ordinary project planning, but they can directly affect development strategy, property evaluation, remediation decisions, water management, and future liability. TSC helps clients better understand how PFAS concerns may intersect with groundwater conditions, site use, and project decision-making so those issues can be addressed with greater clarity and less guesswork.

This is practical consulting built on real field experience. TSC exists to help clients understand site conditions, reduce uncertainty, and move forward with better information.

If your project involves groundwater, drainage, subsurface conditions, or PFAS concerns, TSC is ready to help.
